-------POLAND is in the plains of central Europe, with a population of 39 millions. The currency is the Zloty. Poland is bordered by Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Germany. It has a coastline of 528 km ( 330 miles ) on the Baltic Sea here is a border with Kaliningrad ( part of Russia ) . The Capital is Warsaw with a population of 1.6 million. ----- I traveled around by train in 2008, then trains were slow but now improvements have been made. Poland is well covered by train routes and roads. Warsaw was badly damaged in WW2, it has been beautifully restored. Warsaw old town ( Stare Miasto ) is lovely , surrounded by a medieval wall. The Palace of Culture is the tallest building in Warsaw, said to be a gift from the Soviet Union. I used a lift to the 30th floor for great views, shows that Warsaw is in the plains of Poland.---Warsaw is on the Vistula river. There are many interesting museums,.100_1040

100_1058.JPG100_1044.JPG=================------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------GDANSK is on the coast, it is said the first shots of WW2 started here. Train service to many Polish cities including Warsaw in 4 hours. --Old shipyards in Gdansk is where Solidarity started in the 50 s. The Crane on the waterfront is a unique building in Europe. The crane (Zuraw ) is on the river Motiawa. Most tourist attractions are located along or near Ulica Diuga ( Long Street ) and Diugi Targ (Long Market ) --I stayed at the Mercure hotel on the 9th floor..--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------POZNAN I stayed at the Hotel Lech. --The renaissance Town Hall was built between 1550 and 1560. In the main square is the Clock tower, tourists gather at noon to watch two clockwork goats butt heads.-Poznan has many brightly coloured buildings. The castle is from 1249 AD -- While in Poznan i took the scheduled steam train to Wolsztyn, ( it stopped running for some months , but has started again 2018 ).-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------KRAKOW is a beautiful city, places of interest are in a compact area. I stayed 4 nights using Krakow as a base for trips to Aushwitz consentration camp , Wieliczka, for a visit to salt mine, and Zakapane. the town with wooden buildings.----PICT0066.JPGPICT0066.JPG-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wroclaw was founded in the 10th century. Three Quarters of the city was in ruins at the end of WW2, but reconstruction has healed the ravages of the past. I arrived by train , the area round the station in 2008 was not great, but the old town is delightful. Lovely town hall and cathedral.================I moved to Frankfurt- Oder on the German Polish borderPICT0152
